I have been watching Made in India – A Titan Story on Amazon Prime this week.
While the series beautifully tells the story of Titan, this blog post is about another Tata company that is rarely spoken about—Tata Press.
Its story of resilience, perseverance, and transformation left an equally lasting impression on me because it was Tata Press where I began my professional journey in 2003.
Long before Titan became a celebrated success story, Tata Press had been a loss-making business for many years, dating back to the era of J. R. D. Tata. Yet, despite the challenges, the organization never stopped striving to transform itself.
My first job, in 2003 Jan, was with Tata Press.
Many people may have questioned why someone would choose to begin their career with a loss-making company. But I joined anyway. Looking back, it turned out to be one of the most valuable decisions of my professional life.
As a Sales and Response Trainee, I was at the very beginning of my career. I was only a small part of a much larger journey, but I had the opportunity to witness firsthand what it means to keep working towards a vision even when success is uncertain.
Hoshang N. Billimoria was the Managing Director then. In
2004 December I witnessed a significant chapter in its history when Tata Press was sold
to ICICI Venture. Overnight, I transitioned from being a Tata employee (Tata Press) to an
ICICI employee (Infomedia India Ltd).
11 Years after the death of JRD Tata, Tata Press was sold to ICICI.
One of the greatest lessons I learned during my time at Tata
Press for 2 years was the Tata philosophy of perseverance.
What stayed with me was not the change in ownership, but the
unwavering determination to transform a loss-making enterprise into a
profitable one. Despite the challenges, the leadership never stopped striving
to improve the business. That resilience left a lasting impression on me, because i was also a part of that challenge.
Never Give Up.
Keep Showing Up.
Success is not always immediate, but perseverance, commitment, and the courage to keep moving forward are what ultimately define an organization and its people.
I believe the story of Tata Press deserves to be told.
It is a story of leadership, resilience, and the tireless effort invested in turning a struggling business around.
Like Titan, while not every transformation ends with success, the Journey in pursuit of success itself is an inspiring lesson in courage, commitment, and never giving up.
Its the Journey that matters and not the destination.
Sometimes, success lies not in achieving the destination, but in the values demonstrated throughout the journey.
That is the lesson I carried with me: Never Give Up. Keep Showing Up.
One realization I've had over the years is that my Single life has allowed me to embrace the journey as a traveller—both personally and professionally.
I've had the freedom to explore new places, take unconventional career paths by joining companies that were loss making, and learn from those experiences.
In my entire career i have worked with 3 loss making firms. The first one was Tata Press and the immediate last 2 companies i worked were loss making companies.
