Bharatanatyam and Martial Arts !

While iam refreshing my fundamentals for my Bharatantyam Grade Practical Exams at Annamalai University scheduled on Sept 27 2021,  I would like to bring forward a fascinating comparison between Bharatanatyam and Martial Arts.

 In retrospect ;

Yoga + Force = Martial Arts
Yoga + Devotion = Ritual
Yoga + Peace = Meditation
Yoga + Aesthetics = Bharatanatyam
This clearly tells us the difference between Martial Arts and Bharatanatyam.

Now let us look at the fascinating similarities between Bharatanatayam and Martial Arts.
Martial Arts refers to Kalaripayattu (Kalari).

There are 108 ENERGY POINTS / PRESSURE POINTS in human body.
These 108 energy points are called as MARMA in Ayurveda.
Consciousness intersects with blood in these 108 energy points.
Kalari (Martial Arts) will teach you the location of these 108 energy points.

In Kalari you learn the location of these 108 energy points and angles of attack on your enemy. You first learn how to attack these 108 energy points of your enemy with weapons and by the time you reach the last stage you will become an energy expert  and  will be in a position to attack your enemy with empty hands.
The last stage of Kalari is called VERUMKAI.
Verumkai is a Malayalam word.
Verum means EMPTY and Kai means HAND.

In the last stage of Kalaripayattu you will be able to kill your enemy only with your FINGERS with out any force or sound.
Lord Ayyappa learnt Kalari from Martial Arts School called CHEERAPPANCHIRA located in Alappuzha District Kerala - South Kerala.

The Martial Arts School in my home town Alappuzha / Alleppey.
This is the place where Lord Ayyappa learnt Martial Arts.

An expert in Kalari will be able to attack and kill an enemy only with fingers.
The second criminal in the video is being killed by Lord Ayyappa using ONLY FINGERS.
A mind blowing attack !
A Martial Artist is simply an Energy Expert.

Same theory of 108 Energy Points is used in Ayurveda for MEDICAL TREATMENT.

In Bharatantayam the 108 Karanas explained in Natya Veda will help you identify and locate the 108 energy points of your body.
Karana = Bharatanatyam Pose.
These 108 Bharatanatyam poses forms the foundation of Bharatanatyam.
An accomplished  dancer will be able to  LOCATE  AND FEEL at-least 50 energy points.

Chidambaram Natarajar Temple Architecture.

All the 108 Karanas can be seen in Chidambaram Natarajar Temple located in Tamil Nadu.

The ultimate objective of both Bharatanatyam and Martial Arts is to be able to IDENTIFY AND LOCATE the 108 energy points.
Not just poses even Hasta Mudras (Hand Mudras) that are used in Bharatanatayam are used in Martial Arts.

All poses should be SYMMETRICAL in nature. Chitteswaram is the best example to demonstrate SYMMETRY.
