Swara Yoga!

In one of my earlier post I had shared that as per Yoga Philosophy there exist 7 Energy Centers in our body.  These Energy Centers are called Chakras in the Vedas.

The energy flows through these chakras via 3 Channels.  A Lunar Channel , a Solar Channel and a Channel that passes through Spinal Cord.

The breath drawn through left nostril passes through IDA - LUNAR CHANNEL OF OUR BODY and is connected to right brain.
Right Brain is responsible for Imagination and Intuition.

The breath drawn through right nostril passes through PINGALA - SOLAR CHANEL OF OUR BODY and is connected to left brain.
Left Brain is responsible for Logic and Analysis.

There is a periodic alternation of Nostrils every hour.

The periodic alternation of the nostrils is balanced every 2 hours when both the nostrils operate simultaneously which usually last for a short time. When both the nostrils operate simultaneously the Sushumna Channel along Spinal cord becomes active. This is called as Optimal Breathing.

The ultimate objective of  any Yoga practice is to BALANCE the airflow between both the nostrils most of the time through Sushumna channel so that you could BALANCE your energy centers.

As per Natya Veda these energy centers could be activated with the help of Swara Yoga.
Swara means a musical note that produces certain sound called NADA.
Nada is produced when air flows through nostrils.
Optimal Breathing occurs when air flow passes through Sushumna Channel most of the time, rather than every alternate 2 hours - which means you are trying to keep both the nostrils active most of the time.

In Swara Yoga one could achieve this by singing  or listening to a combination of musical notes.
A combination of Musical Notes is called RAGAM.

Each chakra can be activated by a particular Ragam.

And the evolutionary story brings us up to date to HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS seen in the last and top most chakra.

All the above Ragam seen in the picture are present in Sama Veda.
Over the centuries many music scholars have extracted these Ragam's from Sama Veda and have introduced the same to the world.

Darbari Kanada is a Ragam that was introduced to the world by Sri Purandara Dasar from Karnataka who is known as "The Grand father of Indian Carnatic Music".
