The Natyashastra (the world’s largest and most comprehensive theatre and dance manual) mentions two different dance styles. They are Lasya and Tandavam.
Tandavam according to Natyashastra is masculine and the dance performed by Goddess Shakti in response to Lord Shiva's Tandavam is known as Lasya, in Lasya the movements are gentle, graceful and sometimes erotic.
Both styles can be performed by either male or female dancers.

Shiva Tandavam is explained in the 4th chapter of Natya Shastra.
Let’s explore Shiva Tandavam today,
The 4th chapter of Natya Shastra is called as – “Tandava Laksanam”

Natya Shastra explains Tandavam in 108 types of dancing pose of Lord Siva / Lord Nataraja.
These dancing  poses are called as Karanas.
These 108 Karanas are found in the temples of India in the form of Sculptures.
If you want to get a glimpse of all 108 dance poses, you can visit the following temples that displays all 108 dance poses of Lord Shiva inside the temple.

1. The Rajaraja Temple at Thanjavur (985- 1015 C.E.),
2. Sarangapani Temple (12-13th century) at Kumbakonam,
3. Nataraja Temple at Chidambaram (12th-16th C.E.),
4. Arunachalesvara Temple at Tiruvannamalai (16th C.E.),
5. Vriddhagirisvara Temple at Vriddhachalam (16th-17th C.E.)

108 Karanas can be employed in the course of :
Dance , Yoga , Martial Arts and Meditation.

A few examples from the text book.

The yogic dance of Lord Shiva is called as Tandavam.
In Yoga your body is the primary medium to harness energy and awakening of senses,
The link between Yoga and Tandavam is Rasa.
When you add Rasa to Yoga it becomes Tandavam.
Rasa means aesthetic sense as suggested in the Vedic literature.
When Yoga as an instrument is used along with stylistic expression, one can evoke Rasa - Emotions and Sentiment.

Yoga + Rasa (aesthetics) = Tandavam

Yoga + Force = Martial Arts
Yoga + Devotion = Ritual
Yoga + Peace = Meditation

According to the Natya Shastra, the goals of theatre are to empower spectators with aesthetic experience and to deliver emotional rasa – make the demons feel that what they are doing is animalistic and cannibalistic.
The primary goal of rasa is to uplift and transport the cannibalistic people (spectators - audience) unto the expression of ultimate reality and transcendent values.

The major objective of the Nāṭyaveda was the experience of dharma, artha, kama and moksha by the spectators.

Rasa is borrowed from Atharvaveda
Lord Brahma compiled together different aspects of each of the four Vedas in the Nātyaveda.

Jagrahpathyam rigvedata :  Recitation from Rigveda,
Sambhyo geetameva cha :  Music and song from Samaveda,
Yajurvedadbhinayan : Histrionics from Yajurveda and
Rasanatharvanadapi : RASA from Atharvaveda

Diseases are not present in any of the 4 Vedas, because God did not create Disease.
Disease is MAN-MADE and they are manufactured by Cannibalistic people.

RASA is of 9 Types:
The 9 forms of ENERGY

You can get a glimpse of these energies in the below kannada song

Now lets explore that one step in dance that represents  Apocalypse and Creation = an unveiling or unfolding of things not previously known.
The dancing posture of Lord Nataraja displaying all 4 Vedas

Iconography of Lord Nataraja.

The image represents:

Srishti - creation, evolution : In this dance pose, the fire and the drum held in the upper hands of Lord Nataraja depicts the radiation of light and the sound of an explosion (Big Bang) connected with the evolution of the universe.CREATION

Sthiti - preservation, support :  Lord Nataraja's left hand shows the Gaja mudra pointing to the lifted leg. Gaja hasta mudra is said to represent Nataraja's power to pacify enemies and remove obstacles that hinder the path to liberation from Illusion and to moksha. PRESERVATION

Samhara : Destruction, evolution : The darkness associated with this event of evolution is depicted by abhasmara or muyalagan, an asura, on whom the Lord places one foot and adopts the dancing posture, meaning to dispel the darkness. DESTRUCTION

Tirodhana :  A  ring of flames representing universe of Illusion.RELEASE AND ILLUSION

Anugraha :  Release, emancipation, grace:   Lord Nataraja's  lower right hand is holding the abhaya mudra (the ‘fear-not’ gesture). PROTECTION

Lord Nataraja dances away the illusory world transforming it into power and enlightenment.
It is so comprehensive and extensive that it has rightly been called the fifth Veda, which was intended to impart Vedic wisdom in a delightful manner.

In art, perhaps the finest articulation of the indivisibility of dance and yoga is Lord Shiva /Nataraja.
Lord Nataraja is the ultimate yogic dancer.

The dance pose is dedicated to Lord Nagaraja , i mean Lord Nataraja has many names ex. Girish , Mahesh, Shankar , Sachin , Gangadhara , Bhavesh , Mahadeva , Padamabhan , Rudra etc etc...

One of my dreams is to be able to dance for Tandava Stotram by the end of 2019
