Today's topic is - "Thalam"
Or in hindi it is called as - "Taal"
Thalam means "musical measure"
Today's topic is how do we measure music ? and what is Taal?
Thalam is made up of 2 words : Tha + Layam/Lasya
Tha comes from Shiva's Tandavam and
Layam comes from Shakti's Lasya which is called as "Rhythm" in English
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lasya
So spiritually ,
Heart = Tha = Shiva
Heart Beat = Layam = Lasya = Rhythm = Shakti
Tha + Lasya = Thalam / Taal
The beats per minute = Vital Force = 70-80 Heart beats is considered to be normal for a human being and also is considered to be a normal speed in music, the entire "Carnatic Music is based on this Thalam/Taal"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnatic_music
The relative heart beats / minute based on various activities we do in our daily life is the basis of Carnatic music.
5 different kinds of heart beat tempo variants
Athivilambha Kala = 45- 60 heart beats per minute
Vilambha Kala = 60-70 heart beats per minute
Madhyama Kala = 70-80 heart beats per minute
Druta Kala = 80-90 heart beats per minute
Athidrutha Kala = 90-110 heart beats per minute
As heart beat is the vital force of a human being , so is thalam the life of the event/concert.
Thalam - Taal is the most important part in dance because it is Thalam - Taal that co-ordinates the following 3 activities:
1. Dance
2. Singing
3. Music Instrument beats
Hence anybody who is learning dance , or someone who is learning to sing or learning to play music will have to learn Thalam, because Thalam - Taal is the co-coordinating link between dance, music and song.
I have created a small video with little more specifics about Thalam .
