So this is my first post for the year 2019.
And my first post of the year 2019 is about - "Lord Ayappa"
Personally , iam a grand daughter of a Guruswamy.
Here you will find a glimpse of who a Guruswamy actually is in the below link.
https://www.sabarimala.org/guru.htm
Let me explain the role of Guruswamy.
1. Devotees of Lord Ayappa before starting on their pilgrimage to Sabarimala temple - will have to wear a sacred Mala on their neck and the Mala should be worn from the hands of Guruswamy.
2.The role of Guruswamy is to help the devotees complete all the Puja's and mantras that are required to be performed prior to the pilgrimage to Sabarimala temple.
Now the most important role-
3. The Sabarimala travel pouch is called as IRU MUDI , the devotees have to carry this pouch on their head. Iru means two and mudi means compartments , its a travel pouch made of cloth with two compartments which devotees will have to carry on their head .
This Irumudi (Travel pouch) is prepared under the surveillance of Guruswamy.
The travel pouch which the devotee has to carry on his head has the following items :
Camphor , rice , rose water , ghee , sandal wood paste etc.

Camphor , rice , rose water , ghee , sandal wood paste etc.
The most important item is Coconut.
The coconut carried to the sabarimala temple is the representation of Human Body.
The coconut water is drained out meaning coconut is broken and emptied and then filled with ghee, representing that the human body of the devotee is now emptied of ego and it is filled with pure life source. This has to be done under the surveillance of Guruswamy.
After completing all the rituals the Guruswamy will accompany the devotees to the sabarimala temple.
As you see in the picture below - shot at a local Ayappa temple in Bengaluru today, devotees start their pilgrimage from the temple with the help of Guruswamy carrying the coconut and other items on their head.
I had been to Sabarimala when i was 8 Year old !
My grand father took several thousands of devotees to sabarimala temple, except me - he passed away before i was born.
Lets come back to today's topic.
Once you enter the sabarimala temple premise, the empty coconut which is inside the travel pouch which is on your head is put to burn outside the main sanctum, and the ghee is carried further for Abhishekam.
This represents that - "You emptied yourself of worldly identity - ( ego , greed , money , anger , lust ) and filled your body with cosmic divine essence and then take the divine 18 steps forward"
A devotee after completing 18 divine steps will see "Tat-Tvam-Asi" written on sanctum sanctorum, but not many people are able to experience Tat-Tvam-Asi.
The first time i saw the word - "Tat-Tvam-Asi" was in sabarimala when i was 8 Year old.
The Annual pilgrim of Sabarimala is called as - "Tat-Tvam-Asi tedum yatra" meaning the "journey to understand -Tat-Tvam-Asi
TAT means - ULTIMATE REALITY - BRAHMAN,
TVAM means - SELF - SOUL.
A Guruswamy's role is to help people experience Tat-Tvam-Asi.
Here is a song and we start the year 2019 with the song.
In the song , a innocent devotee is asking a question to Guruswamy -
"Will my 2 Eyes be sufficient to experience the beauty of Lord Ayappa"?
Guruswamy replies - "Even a Blind is capable of experiencing the Lord" meaning you dont need senses to experience Lord Ayappa.
