Back around 2000 Years ago - the first sumo match was held dedicated to God for good harvest!
During Nara Period "Sumo" was introduced into the ceremonies of Imperial Court.
During Kamakura Period "Sumo" was introduced as a sport for military usefulness.
During Togukawas Period "Sumo" was introduced to entertain mercentile class
Finally during Edo Period "Sumo" Association was formed officially and it became a National Sport!
